It was a Tuesday evening and Zatanna had made plans with her favorite female Bat member. The two were going to have dinner together and more than likely try to plan another females’ time together with a few other girls from the Team since the only other League member were pretty older than the two with the exception of Raquel though she was married now so she had less free time. Boy bands were obviously the best way to waste an evening but not all the girls on the Team were into pop as much as Barbara and Zatanna. Somehow, someway, they'd find an activity everyone could enjoy.
Unfortunately, the point where she arrived in Gotham and Barbara's apartment weren't close. Zaanna was in downtown Gotham late in the evening, and if she were a normal girl then she would have called a cab to rush to somewhere safe. While this wasn't Bludhaven, the crime rate in Gotham was still pretty high. So it wasn't too much of a surprise to notice a large explosion less than a block away as she walked the streets; what was surprising was the building that was being robbed was a place owned by Bruce Wayne.
The girl's brow lifted as she watched five people rush into a building. Someone was attacking Wayne Industries? That was going to incur the wrath of the Batman. It would have been pretty funny just to stand around until he Dark Knight showed up but that would have also got her a piece of his wrath for standing around and doing nothing. Sending a quick text to Barbara, the magician postponed her plans due to sudden work then transformed into her costume.
She was quick to find the group responsible and couldn't help but feel sense of déjà vu to see five people in suits that made their faces impossible to see. "Huh?" This couldn't have been the same group as a few days ago in Metropolis, right? The woman shook her head as she put on her game face. "Stop right there," she commanded just for the group to look at her. They only stopped for a second before the small female stayed and once again the sprinklers exploded. When water balls started to form in the area, she was sure this was the magical female she faced off with last time.
"You wanna go toe to toe again? Fine," Zatanna hissed. "Sllaberif ylf!"
Several fireballs flew at each of the waterballs, creating steam. The room was full of white mist, making it hard to see. Zatanna groaned a little; she really didn't think ahead.

While it might have been an odd thing for M'gann to be wandering the streets of Gotham, it was probably stranger still that the young Martian was downtown Gotham snapping photos of the architecture however photography was one of the hobbies she picked up while studying in Chicago. She had started to gain an appreciation not only of a photograph but she also admired architecture and what better place to find and interesting collage of styles and architecture than in Gotham itself. The city was teaming with architectural gems both aesthetic and daunting and the best time to catch the emotion and feeling of the city was in the evening.
A city changes its face during twilight, transforming into something else entirely. Photograph a building in the daylight with the sun reflecting off its windows and it gives you one look. Snap another photo of the same building as twilight falls or night settles and you get a different look, different mood entirely. And Gotham at night...there was nothing like it. The city was beyond compare when one took into account the hodgepodge of architectural buildings. Various architectural periods and styles with exaggerated characteristics were evident all around, such as massively multi-tiered flying buttresses on Gothic cathedrals or the huge art deco and art nouveau statuary to a Cyberpunk or Bladerunner style feel in the lower districts. Move further into the downtown core and one would notice even some Greek elements presented in the buildings. And in and among many of Gotham's old art deco and Gothic structures of modern glass are skyscrapers and other tall more modern looking buildings. Really there was nothing like it and M'gann having some free time had taken the trek to Gotham to snap some pictures in the fading light. The darkness giving way to a certain ambiance in her photos that were just the perfect backdrop to the buildings surrounding her.
It was then that she made her way to Wayne Enterprises, another architectural statement to the city. She was a block away taking a picture of it in and amongst some Art Deco and Gothic looking buildings when from her vantage point looking through her camera lens she noticed a large explosion less than a block away as she was trying to take a shot. Stranger still though was the building that was being robbed was a place owned by Bruce Wayne. Well the thieves have balls M'gann would have to give them that. Still she couldn't let such a thing go unanswered even if it was Bruce Wayne's place and no doubt there'd be security systems to deal with it, it just didn't seem right to M'gann not to at least go and investigate; make sure the criminals were apprehended.
As she flew she morphed into her Miss Martian uniform her features switching to her green Martian look as well as she invisibly flew through the streets towards the building in question. The trail left by the thieves led M'gann to a rather steamy area and by steamy she was talking about actual fog your vision, immensely humid wall of vapour. The room was full of white mist, making it hard to see at first until M'gann focused using her newly developed Martian senses. It was then she spotted Zatanna as the Magician groaned a little.
"Zatana?" M'gann said as she landed deftly beside the young woman only to then sense the presence of others in the mist.
::So stating the obvious, we're not exactly alone in here are we?:: M'gann said switching to telepathic communication as she opened up the mental line like she used to do when Zatana was part of the Team. It just seemed natural to do as M'gann fell back on old habits.
NOTE: '::' denotes telepathic communication/speech

She heard her name being called though the mist, causing her to look in the direction of the call. Sadly, she didn't see anything but white fog rolling around the room. Luckily, she knew the voice since it belonged to someone she had called her friend and roommate for the last seven years. "Miss Martian," she called back. Zatanna didn't have a code name but in the face of danger, she knew better than to call her friend out by her real name, not that it mattered. M'gann was more amazing than the magician and could easily change her appearance if Zatanna made such an amateur mistake.
But after seven years of crime fighting, she really wasn't allowed to make mistakes anymore.
She heard Miss M's voice in her heard asking if they were alone in this place. ::No. I have this bad feeling I know who we're up against, and if that's the case there's five of them and they're not nice.:: Talking to her friend telepathically wasn't something that bothered her. Long ago she accepted having a little voice in her head on occasion that didn't belong to her. If anything, hearing M'gann voice was a bit comforting. It was almost like being on the Team again.
The young woman pressed her palms together then quickly summoned up a spell to return their sight. "[Sdniw wolb dna raelc.] A strong gust exploded from her hands, forcing the steam out of the opening created by the criminals to reveal a large male and small female both completely garbed in black with their faces in helmets. It was definitely the same people she encountered in Metroplis but that was a long way from here. She really didn't expect criminals stealing from Lex to still be on a crime spree, much less heading to Gotham to steal from Batman.
::Watch out. I've encountered these people before a few days ago. They have magic.::
The warning might have been unnecessary since M'gann wasn't Kryptonian. She didn't let herself just take an attack like a certain Kryptonian they both knew but it was still best to give her some type of forewarning about the dangerous duo. The two wasted no time attacking. Once again, the female started to throw water balls at the girls. Zatanna rolled out of the way. She had full faith in M'gann to be able to avoid a simple, straight forward attack. If Zatanna was considered a veteran then M'gann was an expert in battle. She had seen the Martian do all types of amazing things over the years. So long as they weren't attempting to start a fire here, her friend would be more than fine ducking, dodging, and dematerializing to avoid harm. Zatanna wasn't so gifted.
So when the man joined the fray, the magician had to step her game up quickly. Waterballs and electric bolts came hurling in her direction, driving her on the defensive for a moment. It was hard to get a moment to concentrate on a spell at this rate. ::I'll take him if you take her,:: Zatanna suggested. Since the whole last time of throwing opposites pretty much ended up being more detrimental than helpful, she couldn't just try to cancel out the lightning bolts. She needed to come up with something good while being a good partner and making sure M'gann didn't get hurt. It had been awhile since the two teamed up together but Zee was sure she was still on the same beat as the pretty alien girl.

::No. I have this bad feeling I know who we're up against, and if that's the case there's five of them and they're not nice.:: Zatanna replied, M'gann wouldn't lie, it felt good to feel her friend's mind once again. It had been awhile and she really did miss them all and at this moment squaring off against five unknown assailants was kind of comforting in a way, almost like old times with the Team again. That was one of the times she felt the most whole.
Then Zatanna's words sounded returning with it their sight. "[Sdniw wolb dna raelc.]
A strong gust seemed to explode out and force the steam out of the opening created by the criminals to reveal a large male and small female both completely garbed in black with their faces in helmets.
"No accounting for style." M'gann commented rather cheekily as she size up the crew of criminals.
::Watch out. I've encountered these people before a few days ago. They have magic.::
::Noted. Thanks for the heads up.:: M'gann replied. The people weren't familiar to her and knowing the capabilities of the enemy was always a win in her books. :: Who are they exactly?:: M'gann asked thinking that maybe Zatanna in some way knew who they were since she knew about their abilities. It's was an off chance but a chance none the less.
::Whoah!::
The darkly dressed duo wasted no time attacking them though. The female started to throw liquid spheres at them and because M'gann had no clue whether it was some kind of acid or toxin she wanted none of it and deflected them telekinetically though hung on to one of the spheres telekinetically; just long enough to toss it towards the tall male as M'gann moved; she wasn't about to be a static target, Maritan physiology or not standing still was tantamount to a death wish and Canary taught them all better than that. Zatanna as well had rolled out in the other direction. One couldn't be too careful with unknown spheres of magical liquid and who knew what kind of liquid those spheres were that was tossed.
Waterballs and electric bolts came hurling in Zatanna's direction. There was a moment's pause in M'gann's actions as she caught Zatanna on the defensive for a moment. ::I'll take him if you take her,:: Zatanna's mind sounded and M'gann knew the magician had this. Zatanna was as tough and powerful as she was beautiful and M'gann knew better than to worry about her friend. Zee would have the guy under control and that meant M'gann needed to pull her weight in the fight and take down
Shards of sharp ice crystallized and hardened before a fan of them were thrown M'gann's way, the Martian girl quickly phasing to an incorporeal state and going invisible as she flew around to flank the woman and if successful and getting past her M'gann would materialize a few feet behind her female opponent in an effort to flank her.
"OK you Katara wannabe...Waterbender meet Mindbender." M'gann's smirked as her eyes began to glow, her fingers on her temples as she mentally went for the magic user's mind in an attempt to knock the woman out.
Only time would tell though if M'gann's little ruse worked. Otherwise this would be a whole new world of awkward and potential hurt.

Who were they exactly?
It was pretty sad Zatanna couldn't answer that question. She had encountered them once before but that was in Metropolis. She had idea of what they all could do but she had no names or faces. They all had powers related to water or lightning. While it was obvious the big guy was pretty strong given his size, they had all been pretty powerful opponents the first time she went up against them a few days ago, but she still had no idea who they were.
Zatanna kept silent for the moment as she frowned to herself. Having magic narrowed down to a few thousands of people since the population of Atlantis was skilled with magic. Besides, they weren't using incantation, so it was hard to truly say they used magic. Katt could control water without magic using hydrokinesis. These people could have similar meta powers. Overall, she had no idea who they were or even what they were truly after. At Lex Corp, they had taken some tech but the magician didn't know what they had stolen and Lex Corp wasn't given statements on what they were missing to the Justice League.
The Leaguer thought it might be easier to duel them one on one, and M'gann didn't object. Still, her cerulean orbs lingered upon M'gann for a moment. Her friend had no problems handling herself, dematerializing when the other woman attacked. Zatanna wanted to giggle as she watched the other; leave it to the queen of television to come up with cute lines. There was no reason to worry about the Martian girl since she handled herself effortless around the enemy.
"Time to put you on your back," Zatanna announced as she turned back towards the male. Fireballs against water balls turned to smoke, but fire and lightning was even more dangerous. It would be completely reckless to use them this time around, but she did have another spell up her sleeve. The man's hands started to spark up as she smirked to himself. When a lightning ball appeared again, he wasted no time hurling them at her. "[M'i rebbur, dna er'uoy eulg!]" she started as the balls were redirected towards him. The attack probably wouldn't have hurt much since he could hold those bolts without problem.
"[Dexim htiw leets sdnib!]"
Straps wrapped around his body, binding him before turning into steel. The lightning bolts hit the metal binding and zapped him pretty good as he collapsed on the ground, smoking a bit. It was pretty easy to consider the male out for a bit though these people were pretty resilient the last time she encountered them. Walking over to him, she tapped his body with her boot just to make sure he was unconscious. Her eyes shifted back to Miss Martian who seemed to have things handled on her end too.
Zatanna twirled around on one foot before throwing up the victory sign. "Score two for us!" she cheered. The magician dusted herself off as she looked around at the ruined room; perhaps celebrations were a bit too early. Looking back at her friend, Zatanna offered a cheery smile. It might have been a bit early since there were three more assailants in the building after only god knew what but it was good to fight with M'gann again. Her friend had been someone dependable for the last seven years and nothing had changed.
"Are other team members in the area, or just you?" she asked as she looked around. It'd be nice to fight as a group again, but Zatanna didn't expect it. She was a Justice League member and that meant a lot of solo acts. "If this is anything like Metropolis, they'll be heading for something in this building. Bruce Wayne keeps good security, but I'm not sure he hires security guards ready to deal with a group like this."
She was sure the duo could handle things better than she fared in Metropolis but at the same time M'gann's appearance wasn't planned. If she was on a mission of her own, she needed to take care of Team business. While the Justice League and Team were cooperating closer than ever, it didn't mean the two groups always shared the same objectives. Zatanna needed to stop these people from getting their hands on whatever they were after but Miss Martian wasn't obligated to help.

The mind was a tricky thing to navigate when one didn't want to turn their opponent into a vegetable. Her opponent hadn't seen her coming, she was so absorbed with her spells and finding M'gann she never even realized the Martian had gone invisible and intangible; moving to flank her. Then by the time M'gann materialized and the magic user realized that a green faced teenaged Martian was looked right at her with glowing eyes it was pretty much lights out or well almost. M'gann used her ability to reach into her opponents mind and close down the body fooling it into slumber and watched at the mage crumpled to the floor like a discarded marionette. She didn't normally actually mind blast people unless it was truly required, the Martian preferring to simply put her opponents into a deep slumber that even falling to the ground would not wake them. The young Martian caught the tail end of the light show that was Zatanna's finishing move and it never ceased to amaze the young alien girl just who smartly and dangerously her old teammate could deal out ass kicking. It was beautiful and frightening all at once and M'gann was definitely glad Zee was on their side. "And that ladies and gentleman is called kicking your butts." M'gann said mimicking Dylan Sanders, Drew Berrymore's character from Charlie's Angels, right down to the little dance moves. Yeah it was kind of a good thing it was just Zee here, M'gann felt comfortable compared to when other Leaguers were around. This probably never would have come out of her if it was Batman here but oh no he probably had cameras in this place and ...wow she was so busted if those cameras were recording. M'gann could not hide the wide smile she had on her face when she watched the magician as she twirled around on one foot before throwing up the victory sign. " Score two for us!" Zatanna cheered. The Martian floated over to where the magician dusted herself off as she looked around at the ruined room. It might have been a tad premature in the celebrations department for them as it looked like their job wasn't completed but it still felt like win right now. Looking back at M;gann, Zatanna offered a cheery smile that M'gann returned. "Are other team members in the area, or just you?"she asked as she looked around. " I don't know. Just me I think or well I wasn't with anyone." M'gann replied. "I was actually out here taking pictures of Gotham architecture...don't judge it's a bit dorky hobby I know. Want me to try calling in the others?" "If this is anything like Metropolis, they'll be heading for something in this building. Bruce Wayne keeps good security, but I'm not sure he hires security guards ready to deal with a group like this." "Probably not if these two are any indication." M'gann motioned to the downed individuals. "Cool moves by the way."
Looking around and using her telepathy M'ann asked. : :There are more of em...So, what's the plan?::

M’gann was out being her normal self, exploring the city and taking in Gotham’s surroundings. It was funny to hear her talk about taking pictures of architecture. Downtown Gotham had skyscrapers reaching for the skies and lots of interesting building. Businesses like Wayne Tech and LexCorp were known for being the tallest building in their cities. Walking around this area usually made her remember how small she was compared to a lot of things. For a girl that could conjure up anything with a few words or make the impossible reality, it was good to feel small compare to the scheme of things.
”The East End is pretty interesting architecturally speaking. It’s very medieval with several gothic elements. There are a lot pointed arched windows and heavily decorative flying buttresses. Though, the east side is a pretty dangerous part of the city…”
It was the side of the city Gotham was known for: danger. Robberies, assault, and home invasions seemed to be common on that side of town and it was the patrol area of choice for bat like people. With names like Crime Alley in that area, it wasn’t too hard to guess why it wasn’t safe. Downtown was supposed to be nicer but with robbers breaking into buildings and attacking with magic, Zatanna wanted to jump to the conclusion nowhere in Gotham was safe.
But right now wasn’t really the time for casual chats about Gotham. Two of the five hostiles were disabled but there were still three very dangerous people around and destroying things in this building. M’gann inquired about calling the others but Zatanna shook her head.
Technically, she should have been able to handle a situation like this herself. The magician was trained to handle things like robberies and stopping other magical assailants. Just because she ran into her friend didn’t mean she needed to turn this into an old team reunion by pulling in all the people she considered family to stop something so simple.
”We’ll be…” she started before shaking her head. ”I’ll be fine. I can handle things from here, Miss Martian.” Her tone and demeanor changed as she put her more serious face on. It was good to have M’gann around but they weren’t partners. They weren’t even part of the same team anymore since Zatanna had left to join the Justice League with Raquel.
::Don’t get me wrong, M’gann. I like having you around and working with you, but you don’t have to be here,:: Zatanna projected to her friend.
It was nice to work with her former teammates. There was something comforting about being around M’gann, Artemis, and Barbara when she was facing the world. The other three girls had her back no matter what and she knew how to work with them flawlessly after having spent so much time casually and as heroes. It wasn’t to say she had problems working with the women of the League but Raquel was always her partner of choice since she knew how to combine powers with her friend having been together so long.
There were already established partnerships on the Justice League too. Some people just worked better as a team opposed to others. At the same time, it didn’t mean she complained who she was paired up with.
But M’gann was off being a normal girl and Zatanna swore to put her normal life second to her heroic one. Her father had sacrificed himself and as Doctor Fate all he did was keep the world in balance. She had his legacy to live up to and that meant she couldn’t play a happy teen when there was trouble.
::They are pretty powerful and the first time I ran into them there was a bit of trouble. It’s like a video game where they put the weakest opponent first then smash you with a super hard boss at the end. This time, I’m a bit more prepared but I can’t ask you to stop what you’re doing to help. It wouldn’t be fair to you.::
Before the conversation could carry on too long, there was an explosion several floors above, shaking the whole building. Zatanna raised a brow as she looked up. ”Criminals are always so destructive. Don’t they realize explosions make people come arrest you faster?” she complained with a deep frown. Explosions at this particular building were double bad considering who it was owned by. These creeps would be lucky if only Zatanna was the one to take them out because Batman might not be so nice to them for wrecking his building.

M'gann listened to Zatanna's description of Gotham's east side nodding every now and again to intone that she was listening attentively. To M'gann everything about Gotham was interesting from the high rising modern skyscrapers to the Gothic and Teutonic looking buildings. It was an eclectic mixture and thus why the young Martian was drawn down here initially to snap pictures.
"Thanks. I'll keep that in mind." M'gann smiled.
Things then switched back to the clear and present danger a foot and casual chats about Gotham stopped. Two of the five hostiles were taken down but there were still others, potentially as dangerous if not more so and they needed to be stopped. M’gann had offered to call in the others but Zatanna shook her head.
”We’ll be…” Zatanna corrected with a shake of her head. ”I’ll be fine. I can handle things from here, Miss Martian.”Her tone and demeanor changed to a more serious look and M'gann wondered if it was something she had said or done earlier to cause this shift.
::Is there something wrong Zatanna?:: the Martian asked of the sudden shift and statement of handling things without her.
::Don’t get me wrong, M’gann. I like having you around and working with you, but you don’t have to be here,:: came Zatanna's words in her mind.
::I see..:: M'gann said in her most professional mind's voice. She caught the gist of it and understood. M'gann was Young Justice, still a teenager and still a 'kid' in the eyes of the league. Plus if memory served the Martian correctly it was always Zatanna and Raquel that were teamed up together. Rarely was it M'gann and Zatanna, so the young Martian in a way could understand the older girl's reservations. There were already established partnerships on the Justice League too. Some people just worked better as a team opposed to others.
::I understand.:: M'gann nodded in understanding.
Suddenly an explosion several floors above, shook the whole building. M'gann's eyes instantly looking towards the sound as Zatanna raised a brow as she looked up.”Criminals are always so destructive. Don’t they realize explosions make people come arrest you faster?” she complained with a deep frown.
"Yeah and I think apprehending them and turning them over to the police would be a small mercy considering who's building they're blowing things up in." M'gann replied. "They're actually lucky if it isn't 'Him' they have to face."
Turning back to the magician the young Martian said. "Look, I know I'm still just a kid and have got a lot to learn still, but I'm here to help, I *can* help. I won't be a burden, but I don't want to endanger you either so if you think I'll just get in your way I'll leave you to it. ... Just know that you don't have to do this alone."

Zatanna winced at the reminder. She didn't want to see Batman here since that would be all sorts of trouble. She was pretty sure there'd be a scolding since she didn't immediately call the League to tell them there was an explosion that Wayne Tech since a very important League member would want to know about that. Secondly, these bad guys were invoking the wrath of the Bat and as a young girl that worked under him, she was scared of just his glares. Bruce also had some pretty harsh glares when she was up to trouble as a civilian with Dick and Jason. She wasn't too sure if these jerks deserved that type of punishment.
"Super lucky," Zatanna agreed.
The bonding between the two seemed to stop as M'gann pleaded to help. Did Zatanna really come off that mean? She had never thought less of M'gann or even considered her a kid. When they first met, she was actually the older girl. Martian physiology had made her the younger one seven years later but that didn't change anything in her eyes.
M'gann was smart, funny, and overall welcoming. She accepted people for who they were with a smile and a tray full of cookies. After losing her father, it was M'gann and Conner who became like family as she become the third wheel in the cave. Still, the happy couple didn't make her feel like an unwelcomed member in their quaint household. M'gann was there with hugs any times tears threatened to spill from her eyes and more than willing to be an ear if she needed it.
"You're never a burden and I love being around you," Zatanna said with a frown. "I joined the Justice League not because I thought I was better than you guys or felt like I outgrew you all. I joined because I didn't want to hide the difference I want to make."
She didn't have a secret life and a non-secret life. Her hero name was Zatanna, and it wasn't a particularly common name. With cameras pointed at the Hall of Justice, all her double life went out the door as people at who saw in street clothes recognized her as not only Zatara's daughter but a hero now. The Team usually saved the world in secret so they could keep two lives but Zatanna's life was only crime fighting. School and a social life were secondary at best.
"I don't think of you as someone who gets in the way or who would ever put me in danger," Zatanna continued with the deepest frown. "You're my friend, and I want to protect you. But most of all, you're someone with a life outside of code names." M'gann wasn't human but she was the human girl she knew. She liked girly things, pop culture, pop music, cookies, cute things, and probably was a secret shopaholic. She had came to Earth and almost instantly fit in as a human girl, got a boyfriend, and lived a high school dream life.
But she wanted to help. That look in her eyes and uneasy tone meant she felt pushed away despite Zatanna's feelings. The magician sighed. Had she become really bad with words? Conner was friendlier nowadays and a bit more open. Maybe she became the brooding type in the last year. Soon enough, Dick was going to appear at her door and tell her to cheer up and call her mopey.
That would be so lovely.
"Let's go Miss Martian," she said serious before casting a spell to allow her to levitate. The Justice Leaguer took the lead as she flew upwards though the hole created up towards where the floor that seemed to be on fire from the explosion earlier. As she soared though the building, lightning bolts seemed to rain down on them. "[Er'ew rebbur, er'uoy eulg!]" she shouted casting a reflective barrier around the two girls. When they made it to the top unscathed the large guy in front of them looked a little impressed. "You are soooo doomed. You should give up now," she warned. Magic and mental powers combined could be pretty scary.

M'gann listened as Zatanna talked about her reason for joining the Justice League. It made sense to the Martian and she admired the fact that the young woman didn't want to hide the difference she was making in the world i.e. she didn't have a secret identity or life, she was Zatanna in and out of costume/hero life. Sometimes M'gann wished she could be that way too and be who she really was, but the Martian knew that one a planet not her own, she couldn't be her 'real' self. Even her green self she doubted would fit in as well into 'normal' society. Aliens still tended to freak some people out. Heck listening to people like G. Gordon Godfrey on his GBS show talk about aliens on earth was enough to convince M'gann to keep her Megan persona. The young Martian nodded in understanding of the magic user's explanation.
"I don't think of you as someone who gets in the way or who would ever put me in danger...You're my friend, and I want to protect you. But most of all, you're someone with a life outside of code names." Zatanna said.
"I understand." M'gann smiled and nodded at Zatanna's logic. "I've always admired you and your strength, and I guess I always felt like you were in a league all your own. You can literally do anything and the control you have of your magic abilities... I guess compared to what I can do, I just always felt I'd get in your way." the young alien girl confessed.
"But thanks for wanting to look out for me." the young Martian said. It meant a lot to M'gann to know this and learn from Zatanna what she did. It actually levied the young alien girl a little.
"Let's go Miss Martian," Zatanna said serious before casting a spell to allow her to levitate.
"You got it!" M'gann beamed and just as Zatanna levitated, the young Martian followed suit using her flight ability to levitate and followed after the magician.
As they soared though the building, lightning bolts seemed to rain down on them causing the young Martian to evade the searing bolts.
"Whoah!" M'gann said narrowly missing being struck as she dodged the lightning strike then looked over at Zatanna who called out a magical spell, casting a reflective barrier around them both. And that was exactly what M'gann meant by the young woman's ability being amazing. Next to the mage M'gann admired so much, the young Martian just felt like she still had a lot to learn about being in control of her own abilities even under extreme pressure. But it also made M'gann excited and happy to be able to be with her former Teammate and fight alongside her in all Zatanna's splendor.
God she missed this.
When they made it to the top unscathed the large guy in front of them looked a little impressed. "You are soooo doomed. You should give up now," Zatanna warned causing the young Martian to grin with confidence.
"Yeah, save yourselves a world of trouble." M'gann added.Magic and Mental powers, yeah one helluva one-two punch.

As long as she stayed calm, Zatanna could dish out spell after spell. It had taken a lot of work since her childhood but thinking on the fly worked for her though practiced spells were the most effective. Ice, wind, and fire spells were things she could recite in her sleep but situations never seemed to be so simple as to use such spells. As a child, she easily felt overwhelmed from time to time but a certain dashing dark haired boy once told her the secret to life.
She had to stay whelmed.
If she got overwhelmed, Zatanna would crack from the pressure. If she was underwhelmed, she would underestimate her enemies and they would get the best of her. It was like being in zen, except she wasn't even close to feeling complete and absolute peace with her body and mind. Battles made her heart bump and her worries pile up! But if she could keep calm, things would turn out fine.
The two girls came off bold and confident and the man didn't seem all too impressed. He held his weapon up letting the lightning crackle and making the air feel charged. The hairs on her arms were standing up though she ignored that prickling sensation. "I take it you're not gonna give up. Good," she called out. Her fingers balled into a fist as she stared him down.
Her shit talking needed a lot of work. Raquel definitely did better in situations like this. Her eyes shifted towards her green companion. She wasn't the rough and rugged type though she wasn't so innocent as they were all years ago. Zatanna smiled. Things had changed but she was happy to be beside a friend at a time like this. They were an unlikely duo but each girl was powerful and excelled at their craft. It spelt disaster for the villains in front of them tonight.
Besides, neither girl wanted to fail. Somehow explaining to Batman how they messed up and were sorry they let his building get trashed and things stolen seemed like it would be a discussion they looked to avoid at all costs. Because nobody wanted the bat glare; not as children and definitely not as adults.
::Time to take him down. You take his weapon, I'll freeze him, and then we can both attack and hopefully take him out for good.::
This was just a distraction from the enemies that needed to reach. The man and woman weren't here and those two were the more important ones as she learned. It was smart to get this over with as fast as possible.
Zatanna waited for M'gann's response. If the other agreed, she would go running at the enemy to distract him into attacking her before freezing him. If M'gann disagreed, the magician would be taking a gamble on her protective spell to see how well it worked with not just reflecting magic but also keeping her safe from a physical attack. Nodding her head, the young woman sprinted forward. Her blood pumped with adrenaline while her brain seemed to tell her everything she was doing was either wrong or just plain crazy. She didn't have super human durability so if she got hit by the oversized mallet it would definitely leave a mark.

Fear is the mind-killer. She read that once in a book and then saw it in a movie afterwards. It said that Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration and that a person has to face their fears and permit it to pass over them rather than recoil away or react to it. Her uncle had said a similar thing to her, that it wasn't a bad thing to feel fear as it in and of itself is not altogether a bad thing. Fear heightens the senses, makes one more alert, slows down time or the perception of it as the mind recalculates and makes the necessary adjustments to survive. So it isn't wise to shut out fear so much as acknowledge it, accept it as a bodily reaction but do not be consumed by it. Allow it to pass over and once it has past through the 'inner eye' can be used to seek out the path. That clarity of focus honed by fear gives a person the edge, controlled and it cannot be a weapon used against you but rather one could use it against one's foes. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing...only I will remain. At least that's what Paul Atreides believed and well it can't be all that bad since he did beat the Reverend Mother at her own game. What a great movie. M'gann thought as she followed after Zatanna musing over her own fear and trying not to let it get the better of her. Fear, nerves, it was all the same thing really and if it was one thing she learned, you never let them see your fear. The two girls came off bold and confident as they faced a man that didn't seem all too impressed. He held his weapon up letting the lightning crackle and making the air feel charged. M'gann could smell the sweet scent of ozone from the crackling arcs it made. Her stomach did tight knot turns, not that it even showed on M'gann's face. She kept it neutral with the hint of sass, like her companion's. "I take it you're not gonna give up. Good," zee called out. Her fingers balled into a fist as she stared him down. "Well, he can't say we didn't warn him." M'gann followed through. She wasn't exactly the best at talking smack either. Wally and Artemis used to be the best with the zingers but well, they weren't hear and so the villain had to deal with a rather PG version of smack talk. Regardless, Zatanna and M'gann had other skills they excelled in. Sure maybe they were an unlikely duo but they were each at the top of their game. That meant the villains tonight were in for a hell of a smack down. Plus there was the extra incentive of not failing and having to answer to Batman about the debacle and really no one wants an up close and personal view of the perma-scowl of failure. No one wanted that look, especially from the Bats. He had that look down pat. Zatanna's mental message though pulled M'gann out of her internal musings. ::Time to take him down. You take his weapon, I'll freeze him, and then we can both attack and hopefully take him out for good.::::Got it.:: M'gann said with a smile as she locked her eyes on the man before her. As soon as Zatanna wnet running at the enemy to distract him into attacking her M'gann concentrated and lashed out with her telekinesis hoping that with his attention on Zatanna and M'gann appearing not to have moved the man would not consider that his weapon would be psionically taken from his grasp. As soon as she got a hold telekinetically of the weapon M'gann urged Zatanna to do her thing. ::I've Got it!:: M'gann said as she got her mental hold on the weapon and tugged, just as she signalled Zatanna to proceed with the next stage of her plan. ::You're up.::
