”Shayera. There is a robbery in progress at 5th and Grande”
A voice filled her ear through the small communicator and the Thanagarian sighed heavily. She closed the book she had been reading on the outside patio of her highrise loft apartment and brought her hand up to her right ear and pressed the small button in the communicator that allowed her to speak to the Watchtower.
”This is supposed to be my day off J’onn”
”I apologize but you are the closest in range. “
Shayera looked up at the sky in defeat. A day off in the League was never truly a day off and normally she wouldn’t mind the interruption, but today she had planned on trying to figure some personal things out, didn’t seem it was going to be that way thou. ”I’m in route”
”I will send backup.”
”I don’t need backup.”
”You want to continue with your day off do you not?”
Well he had her there. ”Fair enough. Hawkwoman out”
Shayera had been spending her day off in the comfort of her and Katars home and she had forgone her usual work uniform for something more casual; a pair of jeans and a plain yellow tee but now that the call had come in she considered changing into her Hawkwoman gear but thought against it, people in this city knew who she was already with or without the mask, it was hard to hide it when she went out. Only two people in this world that giant hawk wings sprouting from their back after all. This was her day off after all and once this was done she had every intention with going back to her plan for the day. Quickly Shayera got up from the patio chair she had been resting in after setting her book down on the round glass table and entered the apartment to fetch her mace which was resting against the wall near the door. Shayera grabbed her weapon and slipped on a pair of brown boots and grabbed her favorite brown leather jacket from the rack near the door.
Zipping up her jacket Shayera took her mace and headed back for the patio, diving off its edge. The woman dove a few feet before opening her wings and letting herself soar before they began flapping and propelling her forward. The Thanagarian steered herself in the direction of the busier part of the downtown area where 5th and Grande were. Shayera flew down to street level as she neared so she could more easily see her assailants and she spotted the two thieves exiting the shattered window front of a jewelry store. Well there was an unusual sight for this city: Copperhead, he must be trying his luck out in new cities, won’t he be disappointed.
One of Copperhead’s accomplices was exiting the building with his second handful of stolen goods when Shayera swooped in, swinging her mace and knocking him and the merchandise aside while she landed at the store front where she could see Copperhead and some others inside. You boys sure picked the wrong city.” She told them now that she had their attention and lifted her mace up as she readied to enter the store but before she could get two steps in the henchmen pulled out guns and began shooting.
Shayera quickly jumped to her side and ducked behind a car. Ok, maybe she could use that backup now.

Today was another one of those oh so rare "day off" days for Detroit native, and inter-galactic policeman, John Stewart. Once again he wasn't scheduled for active duty with the Justice League, and his request for a brief vacation from active lantern duty had been approved. However as he walked down the sidewalk in his old neighborhood, John was about to be reminded of something. What something? The fact that crime and criminals take no days off. So in essence neither did he.
John.
Stewart stopped as he heard the voice of the Martian Manhunter in his ear.
*Sigh*
Conversations between these two were often cold, at best. After several years there was still resentment about the happenings that led to planet Xanshi's destruction. Yet both men were professional when it came to matters of protecting the people. So John reached up and touched the button on his communicator.
Go ahead.
John answered matter of factly.
There is a robbery in progress at 5th and Grande in Chicago.
There was no immediate response from Stewart. It wasn't that he didn't care, but John knew that Shayera and Katar made their home in Chicago. Now he had no idea of Katar's current duty status with the League, but knew from their last conversation Shayera was on a day off as well. Most likely she was at home in the city already.
I have dispatched Hawkwoman.
As expected.
It is not likely that she needs it, but I promised her backup. You are the closest League member not on assignment.
On my way. Stewart out.
John released the button on his communicator. He took his right hand from the pocket of his jeans and pointed his fist at his shoes. The green ring on his hand glowed as his hiking boots turned into the boots of his lantern uniform. From the boots up his jeans seemed to transform up his legs into his uniform on up until he stood completely in the green lantern uniform. There were shocked bystanders looking on, having had no idea a member of the Justice League was nearby. They grabbed their phones and started taking pictures as John lifted off from the ground and flew away.
One of the great things about a green lantern power-ring? One of its many abilities was that it could not only allow the user to fly, but propel them at speeds to match the fastest fighter jets. So the flight from Detroit to Chicago was remarkably brief. The city was crowded as always as John flew down low through the streets now. Upon arrival into the city, the lantern had instructed his ring to scan for the signature of Hawkwoman's mace. Once it locked on he was in route.
When finally John arrived on the scene, he saw Shayera crouched behind a car. As he descended on the scene, he could tell that one side of the car was riddled with bullets. A hail of gunfire was assailing the car from inside the jewelry store it was parked in front of. Clearly it wouldn't be much longer before the car offered no more shelter. Stewart aimed his ring in front of the car and concentrated, willing a dense green wall between the car and the gunfire. John landing behind the crouched Hawkwoman.
And here J'onn didn't think you'd really need any backup.
He said with a bit of a smirk.

The rain of bullets continued and Shayera knew that this car was not going to provide protection for much longer, she was going to have to move but first she needed a break in the fire to do it. The Thangarian did not feel like taking a bullet on her day off but, in order to move she had to see what was going on. Stretching her neck back a little Shayera tried to peer over the car but a close sounding 'pang' of a bullet ricocheting off the car made her quickly double think that. She was going to have to do something thou because sooner or later those bullets would get through and she needed to stop these guys before they could make their escape.
Just when she was thinking she was going to have to bite the bullet (yes, she made her own pun) a green light shone down and helped reinforce her hiding spot accompanied by a familiar voice. "I had it under control." She told him as his tease, standing up from behind the car now that she was protected by the wall construct. Shayera was glad that he was here but her pride may have been a little hurt "But, now that your here I suppose I could use you." The mace in her hand sparked to life and Shayera held it up, she was ready to bring some pain to these punks and even the score a little.

I had it under control
Of course that was Shayera's response. Honestly John wouldn't have expected any less. Anything different from the proud Thanagarian would've actually been surprising. But still that didn't mean the lantern believed her claim. Indeed he gave her a look that said "Sure you didn't".
But, now that you're here I suppose I could use you
She'd said when getting up behind the safety of his wall construct. He looked at her and chuckled when her mace had sparked to life. Those poor fools in the jewelry store had no idea the amount of hurt coming their way. His knowing almost made John feel sorry for them....Almost.
By all means, lead the way.
Stewart said before looking abck at the storefront. From the top of the construct wall, two machine guns built their way up. They began chain firing bullets of green hard-light energy into the store. The thieves hadn't been expecting something like that and now they scrambled behind cover. Yet almost as soon as the bombardment began it was over. The lantern dropping the construct wall from existence as he prepared to follow Shayera's lead into the store to bring a lil justice to these crooks.

Shayera gave John a sideways glance 'keep up if you can" she told him before taking off. Her wings lifting her into the air and over the height of his construct wall before he could dismiss it, the hawk woman following behind the green construct bullets in a charge. John's distraction had pushed the thieves toward the back of the store, leaving her path clear and as soon as she was close to the blown out store window Shayera landed hard on her feet in front of the gaping glass hole.
The moment her feet touched ground again she gave a very powerful flap of her wings, sending a strong rush of air inside the shop and knocking a few of the displays over and some of the men inside down and knocking their guns from their hands. Confidant that her way would be bullet free for the moment the Thanagarian ran inside, jumping over the broken glass and swinging her mace at the closest opponent.

Indeed the would be crooks inside were caught off guard by the sudden appearance of the lantern; and his constructs. Indeed they'd sought shelter in the back of the store. It seemed to offer little though as Shayera's gust of air, propelled in by her wings, blew over displays and criminals. Guns skittered across the floor and a mad dash was made for them. John was right behind Shayera as she entered the broken window.
The first criminal went flying against a wall as his chest caught Shayera's mace. Another was almost back within reach of his gun. Stewart raised his right arm and his hand clenched into a fist again. The criminal looked up as the green ring glowed once again. From the ring a beam of green light streaked forward and the end became a hand that grabbed the gun. The criminal looked down in time to see his gun swing up at his own face. The guy was down hard. John looking over at Shayera's way.
So is this how you usually spend a day off?
The lantern asked as he ducked down. A criminal had swung a baseball bat found under the counter. John rose back up with an uppercut to the guy's chin sending the guy to his back. If this was a normal day off for Shayera; John would have to take notes, it was more exciting than most of his.

"This? This is like a lazy Sunday for me." Shayera said behind her shoulder at John's comment, even if she had tried spending a quiet day at home she was not about to pass up a chance to talk herself up in front of John. She didn't know why but it was always more fun to do that when he was around.
The ringleader of this little heist Copperhead had gotten up from his impact against the wall thanks to her wings earlier and was now trying to charge at the heroes and came at them swinging. Shayera ducked out of the way of the swing and gave one of her own, swinging her mace at the snake but, given his namesake the thief was a slippery one and managed to weave his way out of the path. Copperhead ducked under the extended mace and got himself behind Shayera and grabbed her, holding his arm against her throat to hold her straight so he could bite her.
The red head dropped her mace and grabbed on to the mans arm, trying to pry him away from her. It was a struggle but she got him and as soon as she was free Shayera reached behind her, got a good grip and tossing Copperhead forward; picking him up from the ground and arching him over head and launching him against the wall with her usual 'battle cry'. The villain hit the wall across the room with a thud and slid down to the floor.
Now that he was down Shayera looked around to see if anyone else was left and not seeing anyone standing she knelt down to pick up her mace. "Well, that was fun." She said while looking toward John and dusting off her coat of dust from debris.

This? This is like a lazy Sunday for me.
He heard Shayera boast. A small laugh escaped him as the lovely Thanagarian always seemed to get a lil more boastful in his company.
You should see my Mondays then.
John retorted before he blasted the sole remaining thug with a green energy bolt from his ring. As the lantern was finishing off the last thug, Copperhead made his move. John heard the villain coming as glass crunched beneath his feet. Most probably would've swung around to stop the villain, however Stewart knew that Shayera had his back. So he finished up securing a thug with some construct binds. That's when the sound of Shayera's heavy mace hitting the ground caught his attention.
John spun around on his heels, right arm raised and extended with his ring aimed at Copperhead. The ring was glowing bright, ready to blast the villain....But gah! There was too much of a chance at hitting Shayera. So the lantern held his position. A smile coming across his face as his friend and fellow hero overpowered Copperhead.
As the hapless villain thudded to the floor, off the far wall, Shayera seemed to already be seeking another victim.
Well, that was fun.
John glanced around. Police officers were starting to make their way in now.
If not a bit anti-climatic.
He said, sounding a lil disappointed.

"Mhmm" Shayera agreed. She shouldn't be complaining, this was supposed to be her day off but now that she had a little action and it didn't quite live up to expectations she wanted more, she did not leave her book and home for a small 15 minute fight. As the police began to arrive the Thanagarian looked around at the mess that they created and winced a little, it was a part of the job; a occupational hazard but the cities and shops were always reimbursed but that was better left for someone else to explain. That was more of a Manhunter or Superman thing.
Well, since she wasn't ready to just call it quits right now after that and needing something else to do Shayera looked at John and motioned her thumb behind her "What do you say we get out of here before the press comes? Go see what other trouble we can get into?" He didn't have to but she figured that since they both were here it would be rude not to ask and she wouldn't mind the company, not if it was John.

John was stroking his chin; his mind wandering to what he'd do with the rest of his day, when Shayera agreed with his opinion of the battle. He noticed her looking around the utterly destroyed interior of the store. The veteran Lantern/Leaguer took a gander himself. There was sure to be a very upset owner of the store not far behind the arriving police. Explaining to him/her the way of getting reimbursed for the damages? That....that was a job for Superman, or J'onn.
What do you say we get out of here before the press comes? Go see what other trouble we can get into?
Shayera quipped, apparently thinking the same as John was. He looked at her and nodded.
Ha. Hanging out with you? I'm sure there'll be plenty to get into.
A teasing tone to his voice. Though being honest, John kind of meant it. Not that he minded it all. Spending time with Shayera was easily one of his favorite things to do when home on Earth. Sure that was kind of wrong and frowned upon; what with her being a married woman an all, but....still, John really enjoyed her company. More than he did of most people.
More cops entered the store, taking away criminals who were cursing the Leaguers.
You ready?
John asked as he levitated slightly above the ground thanks to his ring.

"Well I wouldn't want to disappoint" She was already way ahead of him, securing her mace around her belt to let it hang safely at her side she was ready to get out of here. Now that the crooks were being taken away and were no longer a problem Shayera nodded at John's 'you ready' and took off for the air, going above the building and away a bit to get out of the range of any gawking cameras or onlookers. Now that they were in the air and away from wandering ears Shayera could openly speak to John
"So, were you in the area or did J'onn interrupt your day off too?" It was hard to keep track of who in the league had a day off and who didn't. Days off were so rare anyway that if you didn't see someone around you just assumed they were on assignment.

Well I wouldn't want to disappoint.
Hmph! As if she could disappoint this Green Lantern. When she flew off, John watched just for a moment. He looked back at the officers and nodded. Then just like that, Stewart was ascending up to match up with Shayera above the city's buildings. It didn't take too long to catch up with the beautiful Thanagarian.
So, were you in the area or did J'onn interrupt your day off too?
John shook his head.
No. Unless you consider Detroit as "in the area"...
He shrugged.
...I wasn't up to anything really though. Just walking the old neighborhood.
His expression changed a bit. John looked a bit sad.
Though to be honest these days "home" seems as alien to me as most of the worlds in our space sector. Its like everytime I get a chance to come home, the city has changed so much more. I barely recognize my home these days...
Bah! He didn't mean to drag the mood down. So John flashed a smile at Shayera.
How about you? What were you up to? Last time I glanced at the duty roster, I think you were listed for today off.

Now that John was with her Shayera began to fly off slowly, not going toward any particular direction just figuring that it was better to get away from the scene before they got called in for another mission. "you too, huh?" So, he had been on his day off. Now she felt somewhat bad and when J'onn said he was sending backup she figured it would be a person on active duty, things must have been very busy out there today if no one else had been available. Thou, all things considering she was glad it was John that was sent because it could have been a lot worse..a lot worse. Not that there was anything wrong with John, he was a good teammate and was rather easy on the eyes...
wait....
did she just say that?
Pushing that aside Shayera looked over at John as he kept speaking and she frowned slightly. She understood where he was coming from in a way, she had not been home to Thanagar in years and the Thanagarian couldn't imagine what had changed since she had been away. Thou, that was nothing compared to living on your home planet and feeling like a alien in your own city.
Shayera didn't know if she should answer him or not, if she should acknowledge or just let it slide but when he changed the subject she opted to let it go. "Reading, actually...or trying too when J'onn called. Trying to take some advice and actually relax on a day off but I should have known that wasn't going to work out."

"Reading, actually...or trying too when J'onn called. Trying to take some advice and actually relax on a day off but I should have known that wasn't going to work out."
John looked at her incredulously. He found it quite difficult to believe Shayera was trying to take it easy. Over the years John had known her, he'd found Shayera to not be that good at "taking it easy". She almost always seemed to want something to do.
You? Were just reading and relaxing?
He closed his eyes as they flew. A moment later Stewart opened his eyes.
Nope. I just can't picture it. Though I understand what you mean about it not working out. There's always some clowns looking to get famous tangling with the League.

Shayera side glanced John when he started going in on her and her attempt at reading and relaxing. Hey, she reads! She could relax too it was only that her idea of relaxing was getting into a nice bar fight and having a drink afterward not this "take it easy" thing the earthlings liked to do. John had to take it a bit further and closed his eyes Shayera smirked a little and playfully slapped his arm which was still rather hard just not as hard as she could have hit him.
I can relax! Shayera defended stranger things have been known to happen she looked at John once more and smiled a little before looking back ahead, laughing a little at his next comment. "I know! Copperhead?! What did he really think was going to happen? When it came to the who's who's of the criminal elite Copperhead was no where near the top of the list, he was a c lister at best. "Did you see his face when he realized who the league sent? Hitting Chicago you would think he would have known better but Shayera had been willing to bet he had not expected her or Green Lantern. Maybe Green Arrow or someone else.
