Nightwing ran down the stairs, maintaining a consistent speed, as he rushed through the stairwell, to the door at the bottom. He was heading for quite the adventure, and Scarecrow would be waiting for him.
The villain had spent the past few weeks in Gotham, and Nightwing was shocked to hear that he was now in Blüdhaven. Apparently, the psychopath was finishing some research on the effects of fear on basic subjects, this time at a local mall. He wanted to see how far he could push it.
Nightwing peered at the man from behind the slightly opened door of the stairwell, watching everything.
The entire mall was petrified, and the young hero was there to change that, he just needed to figure out how. Nightwing knew that if the crazed villain was using fear gas, Dick would need a way to avoid it, and he had his plans, but chances were the villain wasn't even using it, as he had recently found new tactics.
Scarecrow was laughing maniacally, swinging a gun around as he did, a knife in one hand, the gun in another. He genuinely looked psychotic.
Nightwing watched the joy that rose in the man's eyes as he advanced toward individuals, smirking as they cowered in response. The villain gave another laugh, raising his left hand, the gun pointing upward. He let a few shots fire, smiling as the glass from the ceiling rained down.
A few citizens were too afraid to move, while others shielded their faces from the falling shards. A couple of screams were heard in response to the shots, and many people remained silent.
Nightwing scanned the crowd, coming up with a plan. The man was now facing in the opposite direction of Dick, and this would be an easy attack. Nightwing slid out from behind the stairwell door, quietly approaching his subject, who was now threatening a mother and her small child. Dick hoped that the villain wouldn't be trying anything crazier than what he had already done.
Fear wasn't good, but if the man's goal was to scare them, Nightwing knew that the villain wouldn't waste it on a few dead people. He wouldn't actually injure them, not seriously. There was no reason to inflict pain, except to shake them up a bit, which he was already doing.
"You're not gonna mind if I..." Scarecrow held the blade of the knife near the woman, making eye contact with her young daughter, who was now crying immensely.
"Not as long as you don't mind bleeding in the process, Crow."
Nightwing stood in his fighting stance, capturing the villain's attention. Scarecrow turned around, now facing the hero, slightly surprised to see him. Nightwing then prepared himself, knowing that the absence of fear was the victory over it.
