It was the busiest shopping day of the year in America. The day after Thanksgiving, otherwise known as "Black Friday" had become a tradition years ago. The afternoon, or night, before one would gorge themselves on Thanksgiving dinner while watching a game of football. Then early on Friday morning before the sun had even risen, people would storm their favorite stores for unbelievable deals on the hottest gifts of the season.
However when you're the Man of Steel, you usually don't have the opportunity to be one of those early bird shoppers. Sadly the criminals of the world didn't quite believe in taking holidays. So by the time the first shoppers were forcing their ways through barely opened doors, Superman had long been busy saving lives and stopping crimes.
By the mid afternoon things had quieted down a lot around the world. Other members of the Justice League had returned from enjoying their time spent with family and friends. So it came to be that finally Superman was able to slip back to Metropolis. At his apartment the Superman outfit was shed, exchanged for more regular attire. Moments like these Clark really relished. Normally wearing his Superman outfit under his normal reporter's attire. But today for his excursion into the crowds Clark was dressed more simply. He wore his Smallville Crows letter jacket over a loose-fitting black, long-sleeved shirt along with a pair of jeans and a pair of sneakers.
~~~~~~~~
After more than an hour of moving through the crowds, Clark was still empty-handed. Not good. He'd only dared to brave this madness for one purpose: Get Lois the best Christmas present ever. It would seem, however, that the last son of Krypton was not that great at shopping for a woman. Knowing that the longer he stood at the food court the slimmer the pickings for the perfect gift would get, Clark realized he needed assistance. A woman's guiding hand to help him pick out the best possible gift. But who to contact?
Kara?
His cousin had a knack for shopping, however as she was still relatively young. She was up on all the cool and hip items that catered to that younger crowd. So she was probably best left to do whatever she was already up to today. So who?
Diana?
Yes! That was exactly the person that Clark could rely upon for assistance here.
He worked his way outside of the mall and slipped to a more secluded area. Sure that no one was paying attention, Clark touched his Justice League earpiece that was still in.
Diana, this is Clark. I'm at the Mall of Metropolis and I need your assistance....Its kind of an emergency for me...
Those last words seemed harmless enough to Clark as he said them and waited for his friend's response.
They say hind sight is 20/20 and none could have been truer that for this moment and if Diana could have gone back in time and done things differently she would have taken more care in listening to think upon her actions as she had always done. Sadly she had been so used to being called in for help, been on a roll of aiding and quelling a battle that when she returned to the Watchtower, about to shed her armor and vestments for a more casual attire, she had gotten the call. "Diana, this is Clark. I'm at the Mall of Metropolis and I need your assistance....Its kind of an emergency for me..."
Had she not have just been in war torn Somalia with its clan conflicts that ravages the country perhaps she would put less emphasis on his words of emergency and more on the 'kinda of' aspect of his request. Sadly, Diana was in conflict mode having just rescued a village from being massacred, that the thought of it being a peaceful assistance Kal had requested was far from her immediate thought. The distress in his voice to her spoke of an dire urgency; an immediacy and desire that could only come with life or death. At least that was what Diana thought. Far from it were her assumptions, as the Princess of Themyscira girded herself once more for war. Yes she was the ambassador of peace and counsel, Diana even if garbed in her warrior's armor always opted for a peaceful resolution to conflict first, but that didn't mean she was foolish enough to enter a battlefield without the proper accouterments; she was after all as pragmatic and wise as Athena and the goddess of Wisdom did not bless a fool. Crowds parted for the Amazon as she made her way through the mall with hushed and whispered tones. Her presence wordlessly calling to part the people as she moved, their frantic emotions only fueled her misunderstanding; not realizing it was her presence that unsettled or concerned them for they thought she was here for a purpose, a danger. Their heightened anxiety only fueling her own sense of urgency to find Kal, to find this danger striking fear and worry into the good people of Metropolis. What sort of villainous danger would await her when she met up with Kal? For to have him summon her for help and with urgency could only mean a situation of dire and grave circumstance. "Evacuate this area. For your safety, please leave at once..." Diana offered kindly as she moved through the crowd as the bodies parted. Better she try to minimize the collateral damage by evacuating the area as she ran looking for her friend and the danger she had assumed he was in. As she moved, her warning traveled so much so that people were hurriedly left the building, forgetting for a moment their need to shop and instead the instinct of self preservation kicked in. Suddenly the crowds of bustling shoppers were quickly moving their way to the exits; a commotion in and of itself and Diana was at the epicenter of it. === OOC: Diana garbed in this version of her Amazon war gear LINK
There had been a small beep sound in Clark's ear letting him know that his message was successfully received. It was somewhat peculiar that Diana didn't radio back that she was on her way. However this didn't nag at the man of steel for long. No. Rather he just assumed she was busy and would be along as soon as she could.
Good. Diana will surely be able to help me choose the right gift for Lois.
He glanced around, once again taking in that he was literally alone with his thoughts.
Hmm. Maybe its better if I wait inside for Diana. Perhaps at the food court area. I'd be a little suspicious of myself on this day.
And so it was that Clark Kent worked his way back through the crowds into the mall. Several times he'd been nearly bowled over by frantic shoppers trying to get the latest deals. Yet somehow he managed not to remain upright and get to the food court. The superhero with a sweet tooth ordering himself a large mug of hot coco; with extra marshmellows of course. And now he waited.
Not a very long wait though. Suddenly the flow changed in the sea of humanity rushing about the mall. Not to mention a change in the demeanor of the people. They no longer seemed to be in fear of missing out on the best bargins. Now they seemed to be in fear for their lives.
It never ends...
Clark had muttered to himself. He'd hoped that on this one day that the never-ending battle would at least take a time out. Obviously there was no such luck. Perhaps though, with some luck, this would be something he could handle without revealing himself. No other way to find out than by making his way through the crowds again.
He stood up and started towards the crowd. Suddenly a man looking to be in his early twenties stumbled out and fell down. Immediately Clark reached down offered the young man a hand. It was a hand that was graciously accepted. Clark pulled the guy up, being sure to do so easily an feigning a concerted effort.
Say, what's going on?
Dude! Nobody knows! We're all just shopping and out of nowhere Wonder Woman charges in, in full on Xena battle armor. Starts telling everyone to evacuate the mall...I...I gotta get outta here!
The young man looked back in the direction he'd come, and then rushed back into the sea of humanity.
In armor?! Why would Diana be in her armor for....
It donned on Superman right then. When he'd radioed that he needed her assistance before, he'd mentioned it was kind of an emergency. Oh boy! Clark wadded into the crowd and started fighting the current, headed towards where everyone was running from. As he made progress back, he could see Diana sticking out like a sore thumb in her armor. The sight of it made him stop in place, gazing upon her looking about for him and his emergency. Clark couldn't help but laugh. Though he imagined Diana wasn't going to find as much humor in it.
"Evacuate this area. For your safety, please leave at once..." Diana offered as kindly as she could as she moved with urgency through the crowd and the bodies parted as she tried to minimize the collateral damage by evacuating the area as she ran looking for Kal and the danger she had assumed he was in. As she moved, her warning travelled so much so that people were hurriedly leaving the building, forgetting for a moment their need to shop and instead the instinct of self preservation kicked in. Suddenly the crowds of bustling shoppers were quickly moving their way to the exits depleting the hallways; a commotion in and of itself and Diana was at the epicentre of it. Still it was a bit odd to her though as she moved further into the bowels of the mall, to not yet have heard the sounds of a battle, the scrapes and pounds of a skirmish and to that end the answer was about to be answered with the parting of the frantically fleeing bodies bore a sole figure standing now before her in all his unimpressive unassuming glory...Clark Kent? Dressed simply in a Smallville Crows letter jacket over a loose-fitting black, long-sleeved shirt along with a pair of jeans and a pair of sneakers. His trade mark thick rimmed glasses framing cerulean blue eyes that to Diana were unmistakable even behind such an unassuming and unimpressive look. And for the first time in probably the entire time Kal-El had known Diana, the Princess of Themyscira faltered a moment; mouth opened in a brief moment of confusion and surprise as she stood armored with shield and sword in a place of family and commerce. This was not war and there was no conflict, only confusion now. Even if blessed with the Wisdom of Athena, it did not mean she was infallible and nor was she impervious to the human frailty of 'errors' and thus said blessed individual did have her 'Homer Simpson' moments. The proverbial word 'D'oh!' did come to mind when the Amazon Princess looked about at her now very abandoned and clear surroundings when the man before her began to laugh at what could only be described as Wonder Woman's almost 'WTF' look of confusion only since she didn't really swear it was more a WTH?! (what the heck?!) moments. "Superman had said...I thought...it was an emergency..." her voice trailed as there was definitely no emergency considering Kal was dressed as his alter ego Clark Kent. "There is no emergency is there?"
And at the moment a laughing Clark Kent was facing her chuckling at her misunderstanding. "I fail to see the humor in having scared these good people to death." Diana stated even if she knew his laughter was less at them and more at her. Actually being laughed at wasn't really helping either. "Care to explain this...urgent emergency of yours...Mr Kent.?"
OOC: So I figured that superman's identity is still unknown to the general populace so I had Diana pretend like she was talking to Clark Kent the reporter and therefore refrained from calling him Kal.
Inwardly the Amazon warrior should know that Clark felt terrible. He really did. Honest! In reality he didn't want to laugh as Diana stood there, mouth agape in confusion and surprise. Yet it was hard to control himself. And maybe Clark wasn't really laughing at Diana. perhaps he was actually laughing at the titanic level of misunderstanding here.
"Superman had said...I thought...it was an emergency..."
For a moment her voice had trailed.
"There is no emergency is there?"
Clark shook his head as he chuckled still. Diana, it seemed, still wasn't finding the humor in things.
"I fail to see the humor in having scared these good people to death."
Well I...
He had just began to respond but she wasn't quite done.
"Care to explain this...urgent emergency of yours...Mr Kent.?"
Listening closely, with that super hearing of his, Clark could hear nothing or anyone else within earshot. In fact all he heard was doors closing at either of the mall behind the last few shoppers. Now he had tilted his head to really be sure of this and now looked back at Diana. Surely at this point there would be police scrambling from the surrounding precincts and headed this way. Not much time for chit-chat.
I'm...I'm sorry Diana, I should....I should have chosen my words more carefully. My "emergency" isn't a life-threatening one, well not on a grand scale anyways. You see Christmas is coming up in just twenty-three days and I want to get Lois the best present that I can. And the truth is...
He ran a hand through his hair as a look of embarrassment donned the man of steel's face.
I'm not having any luck. I think I need a woman's touch...er help, with picking out a present for Lois. Perhaps you could return in your secret identity and help a friend in need?
Clark looked at the warrior with a look of hope shining in his blue eyes. If Diana didn't agree to help then Clark had NO idea who he could turn to.
"I'm...I'm sorry Diana, I should....I should have chosen my words more carefully. My "emergency" isn't a life-threatening one, well not on a grand scale anyways. You see Christmas is coming up in just twenty-three days and I want to get Lois the best present that I can. And the truth is..."
Diana watched as Clark ran a hand through his hair as a look of embarrassment donned the man of steel's face. " I'm not having any luck. I think I need a woman's touch...er help, with picking out a present for Lois. Perhaps you could return in your secret identity and help a friend in need?
At first the Amazon's steely eyes bore down on the Man of Steel's alter ego Clark Kent with nothing less than a stoic mask demanding an explanation for the summons and the laughter to subside. Though as the Kryptonian began to explain the dire yet not so life-threatening 'emergency' it became clear to Diana how the events had taken a turn towards misunderstanding of monumental proportions and most of it caused by her as she misinterpreted his summons. The Amazon's face slowly softened from understanding to true remorse for her take on the situation as Clark's explanation brought about the memory of his urgent call. ~"Diana, this is Clark. I'm at the Mall of Metropolis and I need your assistance....Its kind of an emergency for me..."~
Had she not just finished a mission in war torn Somalia with its clan conflicts that ravaged the country Diana would have put less emphasis on his words of emergency and more on the 'kinda of' aspect of his request but still running on the adrenaline and experience of trouble her mind instantly assumed...but what was it that people said about assuming. It most certainly made an ass of her today. "I-I have erred in a most grievous way." Diana replied solemnly. "I thought - I had just come back from a mission when your call came - I should not have acted so hastily...I, I shall make this right." she said finally looking up at Clark with a hopeful and apologetic look. "I will return shortly." she smiled, the seriousness of her face and eyes softened. She was less warrior and more diplomat now. "Wait for me here."
With that Wonder Woman headed out to of the mall where the crowds were gathered outside. "You are all safe to return to your shopping now if you so wish it." she had said delivering the news to the crowd and allowing them to do as they wish; return to the mall or leave, it was in their hands now. Moments later and Diana returned sans Amazonian Battle Armor and weaponry and within their place as a simple unadorned dress that effortlessly followed the contours of her form. There was nothing embellishing or flamboyant about it, in fact her style could be considered minimalist at best though it was still refined. It would make one question why it had taken so long at all, until one considered what she had to come out of, it made the simple style more logical a choice otherwise Clark would have been waiting eons for her return. As it was it was 20mins at best. With a smile at her friend the woman now known as Diana Prince approached. "Apologies again for the misunderstanding." her smile came easily now with actual humour in her eyes, now that things were cleared up it was easy enough to see the comedy of errors in that moment. "You probably won't let me live that down now will you?" she started to chuckle. "Just please, by the gods do Not tell Bruce. Hera help me if that man found out there will be no shortage of not so subtle jibes I assure you." she was still chuckling when she linked arms with her friend. "So, tell me more about Lois." she started transitioning to the task she was sent for fluidly "For in order to select the perfect gift, I need to know more about her personality." Diana smiled. It was good to see Kal this way; human. It was what she admired most about him. His ability to remain so grounded and humble even with his abilities and gifts. And finding love amongst it all. It was well deserved and she only hoped Lois could live up to that love as Diana could tell the man cherished this woman greatly. "What is she really like, beyond the reporter she has fashioned herself to be."
