Nightwing quickly scanned the area once more, before nodding toward the archer. The buildings around them were illuminated by the city street lights, making even the darkest sections slightly visible, and he doubted there would be an ambush. Even if there would be, the two heroes could most certainly handle themselves.
As for the feds, Red Arrow was on point. Dick could tap into anything, especially police broadcasts. It was effortless, and he had already linked a communication device to receive their signals. Pressing a small button on his ear piece, he actived the device, waiting for the sound to come through.
At first there was just static, and lots of it. Seconds later, in place of what would have been a coded dialogue, there was mere silence.
Nightwing wore a slightly confused expression on his face as he pressed the same button a couple of times, only gaining more static, followed by more silence. That wasn't normal. At that hour, the police should've been conversing about something, at least they usually were.
Nightwing was confident that the silence was simply the result of the little crime activity they'd had on that particular night, though it did raise suspicion. The only case he could imagine, other than that, was the possibility that someone had hacked the system. They could've redirected the signal, and the heroes would've lost connection, but it wasn't likely. Not unless someone really wanted to hide something, and if that were the case, they were succeeding.
Nightwing sighed, looking at his comrade. They'd have to figure this one out on their own. "Either there's no crime in this city at all, or someone's hacked the broadcasting transmitters. I assume-"
Suddenly, a big explosion could be heard on the east side of town, and it captured Nightwing's attention. Immediately, he looked to see what was, by now, no more than utter chaos.
The rooftop had been blown off of a building a couple of blocks away, letting smoke and wavering fire climb toward the sky, while ashes and embers flew gently toward the ground. It was clearly visible from where the heroes stood. The orange glow of the flame was bright beneath the dark cloud of vapor that surrounded it, and screams could barely be heard in the distance.
"That's our answer, we need to go," Nightwing said, stating the obvious. Whatever was happening, it was bad, and the heroes would need to get to it quickly.
Nightwing was almost sure that it was an old, abandoned building, but it was difficult to tell from their given posotion. Not to mention the fact that, even if no one was inside, the people surrounding the building could have been seriously injured. There was only one way to find out. Nightwing ran in a full sprint toward the direction of the explosion, bracing himself for whatever danger awaited, hoping that the archer wasn't far behind.
