HABITS: Mal is a big fan of classical and contemporary jazz, blues and rock music, and a talented trumpet player; when he isn't doing anything important, he'll have his earbuds in to listen to his favorite tracks. If possible, he'll play along on his trumpet, as well. He likes to keep abreast of current events in the world, preferring to read the morning paper over electronic media. When he's anxious, he prefers to keep active, lifting weights or exercising. He's an avid football fan and tries not to miss his favorite teams' games, even if he has to DVR them.
PET PEEVE: Bad referee calls in football. Corporate pre-packaged pop music.

• Intuitive
• Dedicated
• Patient
• Good leader and team player
WEAKNESSES:
• Downplays his own intelligence
• Sucker for hard luck cases
• Terse and stoic
• Grouchy
TRAITS: Although he cuts an imposing figure, most of the people who know and love Malcolm Duncan know him to be a gentle giant, and while he's a little too distant, grumpy and laconic to be considered a nice guy (i.e. he's not your damn teddy bear), he's the sort of guy everyone knows will pull over to help someone with a flat tire unless his business elsewhere is pressing. He often plays the stereotypical dumb jock, and sometimes even the people who know better will fall for the act. Those who have worked with him tend to lend weight to his words when he chooses to speak up. Mal doesn't like seeing people get hurt or pushed around, and he's not afraid to step in, even if the ones doing the pushing are much, much stronger than he is. He's definitely one of the white hats.

HISTORY:Mal comes from a strictly working-class background; his parents met during Desert Storm, and married after mustering out of the military. They decided to take up residence in Happy Harbor, where they took working-class jobs while attending college with their GI Bill money. Mal came as something of a surprise, as they were being careful not to conceive until they were able to afford a house, but they took the surprise in stride and welcomed their son happily.
Mal grew up a little bigger and stronger than other kids his age and could have turned into a schoolyard bully if not for the timely intervention of his parents. Both parents found ways to help Mal channel his rambunctiousness -- His mother through teaching him how to play the trumpet and fostering in him a love of music, and his father through getting Mal involved in organized sports and the martial arts.
Mal's father got his teaching certificate at around the same time as Mal started going to school, and his mother went to police academy soon thereafter, joining the police force when Mal was in second grade. Mal was in awe of this, and gushed that wanted to be a cop when he grew up; an ambition that lasted until his mid-teens.
In high school, Mal's athletic prowess landed him on the varsity football team as center in his sophomore year. He also began dating Karen Beecher in sophomore year; a cheerleader of the HHHS Bumblebees, and an aspiring academic. Although everyone in school had pretty much written him off as a dumb jock, he felt free to be his authentic self with Karen. By junior year, he was being heavily scouted by colleges, and he began to believe he could aspire to a career in the NFL. He hadn't given up on his aspirations to be a police officer, he just had stars in his eyes.
Whereas Mal had his pro-football aspirations, Karen aspired to a career in the sciences; specifically particle physics. In their senior year, she was accepted into college and offered a prestigious summer internship with scientist Ray Palmer (the Atom). She later became his protege, and ended up on the Justice League's teem of teenaged covert operatives.
After graduation, Mal went to Star City U, where he mastered in Law (on a full-ride scholarship), while Karen went to Metropolis University. Going to seperate colleges, Mal and Karen tried to do the long-distance-relationship thing, but could not always manage to make things work. Neither of them had much free time and when they did find time to Skype each other, Karen's mind was always on other things. Mal thought that she might have started dating someone else and was trying to do the slow-fade, so one weekend, he decided to drive out to Metropolis for the weekend and see what she was up to. And he found out, too, catching her and a few other members of the Team walking into a League Zeta-Tube in a dark alley, all while the league's computer announced their hero-identities and league ID numbers. Mal did a little stalking, online and in person, and identified a few team members, as well as Karen's mentor, Dr. Palmer/The Atom. Then he confronted Karen with what he knew. Karen contacted the leaders of the League and the Team, who discussed the possibility of having Mal mind-wiped, but an alternative was brought up, since the Team was now large enough to field several squads on missions, and after some discussion, Mal was made the Team's mission Ops manager, working out of Mount Justice to coordinate Team operations, while also serving as part-time den-mother to some of the younger, orphaned members of the Team. It was just as well, as his prospects with the NFL had begun to dry up as graduation loomed.
After he graduated (with a 3.5 gpa), Mal began looking into a career in federal law enforcement, and was set to begin training with the U.S. Marshals Service when Mount Justice was destroyed by Aqualad. With the team relegated to a warehouse in Bludhaven, Mal decided to go to the Hall of Justice to find alternative accommodations, but this coincided with Despero's attack on the League, and in the Melee, Mal took up the costume of Guardian to stall the alien so the Team members and Leaguers could come up with a strategy to counter Despero. His intervention was instrumental in bringing about Despero's defeat, and the League offered him the mantle of Guardian with the former Guardian's blessing.
After helping to defeat The Light and The Reach, Mal went to Basic Training at the USMS Basic Training Academy and joined the Marshals Service, and wes assigned to work in Manhattan. This didn't please Karen, and she and Mal are now officially "on a break."
