Looked like making sure he was going to reassure Shayera of his joking wasn't necessary. The beautiful woman from across the galaxy had jumped right in with him. It was like the dozens of times they'd been in battle with villains over the years.
Mmm. Probably for the best. Maybe we should even quit the league, move to different planets.
John smiled an added before he reassured Shayera he was kidding.
I do have a whole sector to choose from.
And then it was time to assure her..
Kidding. I'm only kidding Shayera. You owe me a rematch you know.
Just name the time and place.
Oh no. Its not that easy ma'am. See maybe you find out ahead of time when the rematch is coming..
John started.
Or maybe I just spring it on you out of nowhere.
He laughed now. But it seemed that when John had tossed Shayera her water, he'd pulled her out of her mind. Now he reasoned she was still thinking about Batman's silent glare earlier. That man did have a way about him that could rub people the wrong way. And his look? It may've seemed blank but it was full of at the very least disapproval of what he walked in on. Whether or not he could tell nothing was really going on, Batman would lecture at some point about the responsibility of not putting themselves in situations like that.
"Just mind your own damn business!"
The lantern was already telling Batman off in his mind. He really didn't look forward to the conversation. But he did enjoy conversation with Shayera. So maybe he could keep her talking. She seemed a mixture of anger and enjoyment now. Not much different from when they'd started their sparring match. John wondered what had already been bothering her.
You never did say what was weighing on your mind so much that you murdered that poor punching bag.
A quick glance to where the bag had now spilt the vast majority of its sandy guts. What remained inside was just too low below the hole to spill.

He wasn't going to tell her when their rematch was? Fine then, she would be prepared regardless thou something told her that it would come at the most random and inopportune time. Well, when you decide, it's a date. She winked at him playfully before walking over to where she grabbed her towel and leaning down to pick it up. Towel in hand Shayera tucked her water bottle in the crook of her arm and gently patted her face with the fabric and was doing so when John asked his question about what was on her mind.
The woman sighed quietly and stopped the pat down before draping the towel across the back of her neck while glancing at the now destroyed punching bag. That was going to come out of her pay, she could practically here it now. It's nothing really. she lied monitor duty just had me bored out of my skull, gave me a lot of time to think. It's always dangerous to be alone with your thoughts for that long. The hours spent in a less than exciting watch duty had made her put things in perspective, things she wasn't ready to admit or really address. Shayera would much rather stay in denial for as long as she was able, it would be easier that way. At least, that was what she told herself. Truth was, she wasn't sure how much longer she could go on pretending nothing was wrong.

Well, when you decide, its a date.
After she said that Shayera had playfully winked at John. Yeah she was being a bit teasing with him. Because obviously it couldn't really be a date. I mean she's married and stuff! But even still it would almost take a laser to erase the smile off his face.
The lantern watched, with his wide smile as Shayera leaned over to grab her towel. It didn't even register to him that she might think he was smiling like a fool after watching her lean over. But then she found a way to wipe the smile off his face.
Its nothing really. Monitor duty just had me bored out of my skull, gave me a lot of time to think. Its always dangerous to be alone with your thoughts for that long.
Mmhmm.
John nodded. Shayera wasn't being totally dishonest here, but she wasn't coming completely clean either. That disappointed the lantern to a degree. Ever since the deal with failing the planet Xanshi, Stewart hadn't felt totally comfortable with most of the League. With the rift it put between he and J'onn, that had John turning more into an introvert with people who wasn't a fellow GL. One of the few exceptions had been Shayera. The beautiful Thanagarian hadn't seemed to judge John too harshly at his failure. She'd even been there for him when Fatality had murdered Katma....or at least as much as Katar would allow. Mr Jealousy wasn't too thrilled. The point was that John got the feeling there was something going on in Shayera's life away from the heroics. He wanted to be the shoulder for her that she'd been at him. Its what friends do afterall.
I understand what you mean Shayera. That's one of the reasons I avoid Monitor duty like the plague. I end up thinking about Xanshi, or...
He trailed off for a moment before continuing.
When you're ready to talk to anybody about what's bothering ya, you know where to find me.
John offered her a warm, friendly smile before taking another drink of water.

Mmhmm
Just the way he said it Shayera could tell there was doubt behind it and she full expected him to push and prod into what was really eating her. Something that would be a sure fire way to turn this nice little exchange into a heated argument. Shayera was very private about her personal life, which was nothing special to just her. Most if not all of the members of the League and the Team were that way, it was how you survived..even if they were friends with most people here it was still never a good idea to pour out your heart and soul to people. Secrets were good to a point.
But, to her surprise he didn’t push. No, instead he said he understood and mentioned the lost planet. She remembered how broken and defeated John had been , the anger, the despair. It was a tramautic event and she had gone to him during then, gave him a shoulder to lean on and someone to talk too and she knew that she could expect the same from him and when she was ready then she might take him up on that offer.
I know, John. Shayera gave him a small smile and started walking toward the door. She figured that after Batmans interruption and her ‘win’ that it was best to leave things as it was, even if she was still feeling like she needed to do something. Maybe a nice long fly back on earth would help clear her head. As she walked past John, the Thanagarian stopped next to her friend and rested her hand on his shoulder Thanks and with another smile she continued on and out the sliding door of the gym. Time to go change and zeta back to the planet beneath them.
