"You know, I've never been to a baseball game. I could never understand the appeal of hitting a small ball with a stick." Or the appeal of many of the other sports on his planet. They were not physical or that exciting to her but the boxing and MMA fights? Now that was more her thing, anything that showcased warriors fighting and required what she considered actual skill.
While John asked why no one wanted to come with her before she shrugged "Katar is never up for it and I've never asked anyone else before." She realized how sad and lonely that made her sound but all well, Shayera was never the most sociable of the group. She had the members she was close too but almost everyone else was simply a professional relationship. John didn't stop there and as he continued to list off things of what he would drop if she asked him Shayera giggled a little, yes, she actually giggled and that was as strange to her as it would probably be to anyone else. "You're a good friend John. It's nice to have someone like that."

Whatttt?! Shayera had never been to a baseball game?! That fact almost sent John tumbling off the roof. It was hard to fathom her living in a baseball town like Chicago for several years and never going to a single game. If she didn't enjoy the Cubs there would be the White Sox, or vice versa. Then again though she did mention a lack of appeal at hitting the baseball with a bat. Made him wonder if Shayera had ever tried to play the game.
Have you ever actually tried to play baseball Shayera?
John asked.
Some of the best times I had growing up was playing baseball in the old neighborhood. You should give it a try. Ya might like it and end up getting season-tickets.
That thought was amusing. He could just picture in his mind the Thanagarian yelling from her seat at an umpire. A trip to a game would be worth it just for that.
"Katar is never up for it and I've never asked anyone else before."
He's really missing out then. On great food and great company.
Stewart said before finishing up his hotdog. Shayera giggled at the list of things he'd drop to hang out with her and enjoy a hot dog. That was a first. John could barely recall times she'd really laughed, but a giggle was totally unheard of. It put a smile on the veteran lantern's face. He wouldn't mind hearing her laugh and giggle more, the sound was nice.
"You're a good friend John. It's nice to have someone like that."
It is Shayera. I'm really glad to have gotten closer with you like this. It makes being home not seem so....alien and out of place.

At his question on whether she had tried to play the game or not Shayera gave him a sideways glance. ”No…” she knew the ‘don’t knock it till you try it’ saying but Shayera honestly didn’t see the appeal or have a understanding of the game to really enjoy it but she didn’t think she was really missing out.
You should give it a try.
”I wouldn’t even know where to begin. “ The way he made the sport sound was like it was the greatest thing on the planet…and maybe to John it was but she would never understand. Shayera finished up her hotdog and took a few sips from her drink, setting it aside and looking at John now with a small smile. It was nice to have someone to talk about Katar with…even if John didn’t know the problems the two were having it was nice to have someone else share her views on things. It was a shame that her husband was missing out on things, that he would rather spend his time elsewhere doing League related things then to try to enjoy their precious free time with each other. He was always so serious about his duty. Shayera was too, she was a warrior first but even she knew you had to balance the two.
”Having someone to talk to is a nice change” She didn’t want to dump her problems on John since she knew he had his own to deal with but knowing that there was someone there…that helped a lot.

”No…”
That answer came as no surprise to the lantern really. If Shayera had no interest in watching the game, John figured she'd never tried to play it. He'd gathered over the years she more preferred sports like boxing and mixed martial arts. Not bad choices either. But it was as John had said: Some of his best memories were playing baseball as a kid. And so he suggested to Shayera that she should give it a try sometime.
”I wouldn’t even know where to begin. “
At that a smile appeared on John's face.
With me.
He thought on that for a second. Quickly Stewart tacked onto his comment.
I mean I could show you how to play. Unless you're needed back home to finish doing nothing.
A teasing tone in his voice. But honestly though Stewart was hoping that Shayera would accept that offer. He would love nothing more than to show her a sport that he grew up loving. More than that it'd mean more time spent in her company.
”Having someone to talk to is a nice change”
John took that as quite a compliment given that Shayera didn't overly socialize. Of course she shouldn't have to either. The lantern hated to judge someone without really knowing them but, he felt Katar was being a fool. Yes they all had responsibilities to the Earth as the heroes and defenders of this little blue planet. No doubt. But when you commit to someone as husband and wife, then your spouse should never feel like they didn't have you as their confidant.
I'm always here Shayera.
He reassured her.

Hearing the teasing tone in her words Shayera shot him a glare. That sounded like a challenge and she was never one to back away from one of those and John knew that, even if she did have something to do (which she didn't) she couldn't just walk away from this now. "Alright, you're on." Really she didn't see the appeal or the reason to learn but hey, it was something to do other than return home and sit by herself and at least this way she could say that she tried it right? Besides, how hard could it be to hit a ball with a stick? Thou, now that he had taken it upon himself to show her Shayera was going to wait for him to take lead on this since she wouldn't know where to begin and she stood while she waited. "Put up or shut up Lantern."

Alright, you're on.
Shayera sounded like she'd just accepted the toughest challenge ever. A big smile on Stewart's face at that reaction. Twas true that the lantern knew his proud Thanagarian friend wouldn't back down from a challenge. He'd only hoped before that the way he worded things made it a challenge for her.
Put up or shut up Lantern.
John looked over his shoulder at Shayera. Now it was her tone that sounded challenging; as if the lantern hadn't thought this through any further. Pfft. He'd already had his ring scanning for the nearest available little league field. Once the ring found one and reported its location, slowly John lifted off the roof of the building. He turned back to Shayera and had a look that could be taken as playful. Not the normal look or expression people saw on his face.
Well then follow me.
As he began to turn away again, he stopped and looked to Shayera.
If you can keep up!
Then the lantern turned away again, raising both arms in front of him as he flew off towards the chosen field. People looking up from the streets below would surely see a green light streaking across the sky. It wouldn't be unlike what folks might describe seeing one of the Flashes zip by.

As soon as he lifted off and started to fly with his little remark Shayera's wings had expanded out to give her a good take off and she quickly followed after him. She was already mentally preparing herself for what she assumed was going to be a boring time. Whenever a sports match had come on the television she had tried to watch it but it never really caught her attention. There was one that she did somewhat enjoy..hockey was a more physical sport than most and she liked watching the players knock each other around and get into fights but baseball was just...boring.
Once they reached the field Shayera touched down in the empty diamond and looked around. Well, they were here but now what. "Let's see what this baseball is all about then."

Once they had arrived at the field; John first by the way, the lantern hovered above the pitcher's mound. He looked around the area for an equipment building/room. Afterall it wasn't like John just flew around as baseball's ambassador with a bat, ball, and glove. Would've been simple enough to create constructs but, John wanted to give Shayera the authentic feel of the game.
Lets see what this baseball is all about then.
Seemed like the lantern didn't have long before he lost Shayera's attention for baseball. Luckily he caught a glimpse of the building he needed. A pair of green beams shot out from his ring. The ends turning into hands as they entered the building. A moment later and the beams returned to John and Shayera. One beam dropped a baseball glove and ball into Shayera's hands. The other one dropped the bat into Stewart's waiting hands.
Alright Shayera, lets get started. You're going to stand here on the mound. When you're ready you're going to throw the ball over home plate...
John had walked over to home now. he tapped the bat on home plate just to further point it out. He was kind of feeling like a jerk right now. Yet knowing that Shayera didn't watch the game, he wasn't exactly sure how much she knew of it at all.
I'm, of course, going to try an hit the ball out of the park.
The lantern took up a batter's stance and waited for Shayera's first pitch. Just to be safe he willed a baseball helmet-construct on his head. No sense in taking chances with the way the lovely Thanagarian swings that mace.

As the items fell into her hands Shayera looked at them skeptically before shooting a glance at John. So, he wanted her to start this then, Shayera had an idea of what she was meant to do having caught glimpses of games or highlights when they were played on TV so she had the gist of things but that didn't mean she had ever tried it. How hard could it really be? All you had to do was throw a ball, seemed simple enough.
When he instructed her where to stand and where to throw Shayera walked over to the mound and stood there, waiting for him to get ready. The way he was explaining things seemed a little...well it was a little unnecessary and when he took his stance to show that he was ready Shayera rose a brow. "You sure about this?" She asked as she rotated the ball in her hand. The Thanagarian knew she had a strong arm, you had to to handle a weapon like her mace and combine that with her strength and her inexperience in this game she saw this all going south very quickly.
Once John gave the ok Shayera sighed. Someone was going to end up in the infirmary tonight she could feel it "I'm not taking any responsibility if you get hurt." She said before winding her arm back to throw the ball. Shayera followed through and released it, launching the ball in John's direction and hopefully her aim was good enough to where she wasn't going to hit him.

"You sure about this?"
Upon further review in his mind, John really wasn't that sure. He'd held the mace she so easily wields in battle before, and it felt like holding an anchor. The arm on Shayera would likely have any major league scout salivating at the thought of her pitching for their team. Yet here John stood beside home-plate with a wooden Louisville slugger bat in hand. So was John ready? Probably not really.
He nodded.
"I'm not taking any responsibility if you get hurt."
Does that mean I couldn't convince you to be my nurse if I do?
Its not like he was going to change his mind. No way was Shayera going to be able to call him a chicken. So he tightened his grip on the bat and waited as she pulled her arm back. When Shayera released her pitch it seemed like that ball was fired out of a cannon. Stewart kept his eye on the ball though and swung the bat as hard as he could. The instant the wooden bat struck the ball it sounded like a crack of thunder!
CRrRrRrACCCCK!!!!!
John's eyes went wide as he watched the explosion of splinters where the bat connected with the ball. Then the top quarter length of the bat went sailing off in the direction of first base. As for the baseball itself? It never really stopped. Well, that is, until it lodged into the bleachers behind the fencing that protected fans from tipped fouls and wild pitches.
Sweet mother of...
He trailed off for a moment while staring at the hole in the fencing.
Uhh, how about we change places. I'll pitch to you.
John said as he walked towards the mound. Two beams of light streaking out from his ring again. They retrieved another bat and ball.

”We have no nurses on Thanagar, if you’re too injured to battle then you have no use and are put down.” Shayera said seriously. She was joking of course, Thanagar had hospitals and medical aide just like any other planet but it was always fun to throw around that ‘hardened war planet’ stereotype to get a rise out of people. It was even funnier to do it to John since he had to make that little remark. The sound of the bat and ball hitting together was impressive, it echoed throughout the park and after shielding her eyes from the debris Shayera got a good look at the hole behind john where the ball had gone through. Seeing that and the look on Johns face made the alien start to laugh and she bent forward slightly with her hands on her knees. This was such a horrible idea, she had only kind of been kidding when she said she wasn’t taking responsibility if he got hurt and then here they had a broken bat and a ball that seemed more like a missile. ”I told you!” Shayera protested when John decided it hadn’t been a good idea to let her pitch first and offered that they switch places. She didn’t see how that could be any better since if she managed to hit that ball the same way she threw the ball but…ok. Whatever you say.” Shayera began walking forward toward home plate and caught the bat when it landed in her hand. With the bat in hand she got herself ready, standing next to the plate and holding the bat with both hands and downward like she held her mace.

Oh...
Stewart responded. He knew that Shayera was joking around with him there....Okay he was relatively certain of it...Alright he wasn't too sure, but he made a mental note to brush up on more Thanagarian intel later.
...I'll just have to be sure and stay in peak form then.
In the aftermath of the missile Shayera launched at him, she an John stared at the hole in the fence.
”I told you!”
True enough. She had been forthcoming in warning the lantern. But John was still kind of in shock.
Sweet mother of...Uhh, how about we change places. I'll pitch to you.
As they bypassed one another enroute to changing positions, the Thanagarian seemed unimpressed.
Whatever you say.
Her flippant response further pushing home that she didn't seem to think the change would make much of a difference. John stood on the pitcher's mound and tossed the ball up into the air a couple times. Once that he saw Shayera take up her stance at home plate John got into a pitcher's stance. He looked at Shayera an chuckled a bit. Her stance was nothing like a traditional stance a batter took. Briefly John mulled it over in his mind correcting her on this, but decided against it. The point of their little game was to show her baseball could be fun. So instead of being a baseball perfectionist he just went into the pitcher's motion. The lantern pulling his arm back and then slinging forward and letting the ball go!

As the ball started coming at her Shayera scoffed a little. This would be easy, she had hit things coming at her ten times faster so how hard could it really be to hit a small ball that was coming so slow by comparison? When the ball was close enough Shayera took her bat and swung up, it was weird, compared to her mace this wooden bat felt like nothing and she may have over done it a little. As she swung up Shayera went right over the ball and missed it completely, it hitting the fence behind her and falling to the sand underneath. The red head turned and glared at the ball a little, how dare it let her miss like that.
Walking over to where the ball lay Shayera bent down and picked it up before turning and throwing it back to John, she was going to try again and again until she hit the damn thing. "I wasn't ready" she defended "try again" as soon as he was ready Shayera walked back over to the plate and took the same stance as before. This time she would get it.

In his youth John had spent many afternoons playing baseball with neighborhood kids. The game was one of the few real joys he had as a child, outside of his comics and old hero television shows. It had allowed him to escape the unpleasant goings on at the time. Now one of John's favorite positions in baseball was pitcher. The pitcher versus the batter was a true battle. John would usually give a batter one of his slower pitches the first time facing them. Of course with the motions he went through? The batter would surely think a speeding bullet was flying from his hand. And that was all about of the battle between pitcher and batter.
When the ball left his hand John noticed that lil scoff by Shayera. Her deamonor. her look just oozed how unimpressed she was at the pitch. She was overconfident here. The lantern figured this would make for a good show.
WHOOSH!
Shayera swung the bat up and connected with nothing but the air. The ball hit the fence behind her with a "clink" sound before dropping to the sand. It was hard to hold back a snicker as the lovely redhead seemed quite annoyed at her miss. Once she turned around and bent over to grab the ball, Stewart couldn't help but snicker as he held his glove over his mouth. John had to try an compose himself quickly though, Shayera tossing him the ball back.
I wasn't ready.
She called.
Try again.
He chuckled.
You sure?
Apparently so by her stance.
Well alright...
John had given Shayera the slower pitch before, just to feel her out. Now he went through his motions and slung the ball harder this time.

This time as the ball came toward her Shayera did hit the ball. She swung just as it passed in front of her, the crack filled the air as the bat and ball collided. But, with the angle that she was swinging instead of the baseball flying outward more into the park the ball flew straight up. Shayera stood back and admired her handy work, having to bring the brim of her hand up so she could block out the light from the sun to see better. Ha! she exclaimed in small victory. This game wasn't so hard after all and she had managed to hit the ball so take that John Stewart! "I told you I could do it."
